Root Touch-Up With Bleach: What the Process Actually Requires

A root touch-up with bleach means bleaching the new growth at the root without touching the hair that's already been bleached from your last visit. That's what makes it a different job than a standard touch-up.

It takes precision, because new growth and previously bleached hair respond to the same formula differently, and running one approach across both is how you end up with a visible line, or with breakage that didn't need to happen. At N15, a root touch-up with bleach starts at $290 and includes a toner, an Olaplex treatment, blow-dry, and styling.

Watch Tai walk through the full process, start to finish, on a real root touch-up model.

Why a Bleach Touch-Up Isn't the Same Job as a Colour-Only Touch-Up

A colour-only root touch-up, no bleach involved, starts at $99 at N15. It works because hair along the strand holds pigment at a similar rate, so one formula applied one way gets an even result.

Bleach changes that. New growth at the root hasn't been touched by anything. The hair below it has already been through at least one lightening session, sometimes several, and it's more porous because of it.

The Banding Problem, and Why It Goes Both Ways

Banding, that visible stripe where old and new colour meet, isn't usually a product problem. It's a timing and judgment problem, and it can happen in two directions. Run the formula too gently, especially on a black-to-blonde transformation, and the new growth doesn't lift far enough to match what's already there, so the line stays visible. Run it the same as you would on hair that's never been bleached, and the previously lightened lengths can overprocess, because they were already open going in.

Avoiding it takes checking the hair's history and porosity before applying anything, watching how the colour is processing in real time instead of setting a timer and walking away, and using a different formula strength or timing at the root than at the blend zone.

A Note on Breakage

No salon can honestly promise zero breakage on a bleach service, and we're not going to. Hair grows out unevenly, so no two sections of regrowth are exactly the same age or condition, even within one appointment. Good products and a stylist who's paying attention reduce breakage significantly.

They don't remove the variable underneath it, which is your own hair's uneven growth. That's a real part of why the porosity check and the timing judgment matter as much as they do.

What a Root Touch-Up With Bleach Actually Costs at N15

  • Root Touch-Up with Bleach: $290+, includes toner, Olaplex treatment, blow-dry, and styling

  • Root Touch-Up, no bleach: $99+

  • Full Bleach + Toner (first-time or full-head): $238+

  • Root touch-up with bleach result by Tai at N15 Hair Salon, Toronto

The price difference between the bleach and non-bleach version isn't arbitrary. It reflects the extra judgment call the service requires, not just extra product.

Toronto & N15

N15 has three hair locations in Toronto: College & Bay, Dundas & Bay, and Sheppard & Yonge. Founded in November 2015 by Hiroki Sugita, who trained as a master stylist for 20 years in Tokyo, Japan. Every bleach service at N15 includes a toner and an Olaplex treatment, and colour products are largely sourced directly from Japan through the Milbon line.

Who This Is Best For

This is for people who already went lighter once and don't want to start over every time they book a touch-up. If you've had a root touch-up somewhere else that left a visible line where old and new colour meet, or came out warmer than the rest of your hair, this is the service built to avoid that.

FAQ

What is a root touch-up with bleach?

It's a service that lightens new root growth to match hair further down the strand that's already been bleached, without reprocessing the lengths.

A regular root touch-up (no bleach) works on hair holding colour evenly along its length. A bleach touch-up has to lift virgin roots precisely while protecting already-processed hair from overprocessing.

It starts at $290 and includes a toner, Olaplex treatment, blow-dry, and styling.

Some breakage is normal with any bleach service, since hair grows out unevenly. Careful porosity checks and timing reduce it as much as possible, and every bleach service includes a toner and an Olaplex treatment.

Usually 3 to 5 hours, depending on how much regrowth there is and the colour you're going for. More roots and more dramatic colour changes take longer.

Around every 2 months is ideal. The longer you wait between visits, the more regrowth there is to lift in one go, and the higher the risk of breakage and banding.
